Summer time is definitely here, and some families are boarding planes and escaping to a relaxing destination. But many families are piling in the car for a pastime that will never get old, a family road trip.
Road trips may be simply a way to get to a destination or it may be the vacation – traveling from place to place and seeing the sights along the way. It’s always a good idea to think about ways to create long-lasting memories in the car. Many families sing songs, play games and because technology is so readily available, the kids even watch movies.
While planning fun games and activities, why not plan ahead and make road trip snacks a part of the fun? When my family traveled, my mother always fixed food for the trip ahead. This is hard to believe, I know, but she liked to get started very early in the morning, so she would get up and make biscuits and cook sausage so we could have breakfast on the road. And many times, she packed a picnic lunch to stop and eat along the way.
Next time you’re planning a road trip, consider whipping up a batch of muffins for early departure. Take a cooler with water and juice. Pack granola, nuts, dried and fresh fruit and veggies. A few sandwiches might come in handy too. And for a treat, a batch of Cranberry Almond Oatmeal Cookies or easy-to-make Double Chocolate Chip Cookies would always be welcome.
