Even with all the rides, food and entertainment, at their core county fairs are a celebration of the community and there is something there for everyone.
I recently had the privilege of judging the quick breads entered in the Martha White® Baking Contest at the Wilson County Fair. Every year the fair draws thousands of people to the picturesque middle Tennessee town of Lebanon.
The quick breads are divided into eleven different lots, but there are also classes for yeast breads, cookies, cakes and pies in many flavors and styles. It makes me so happy to see so many wonderful cooks and bakers take great pride in their homemade creations.
Interestingly, it is not always the fancy entries that impress the judges. This year, an unassuming looking loaf of bread was awarded Best of Show. It was a perfectly baked loaf of zucchini bread studded with a surprisingly delicious twist – blueberries. So you don’t have to be a gourmet cook to win, but you do have to enter!
This Apricot Almond Scone recipe would make a delicious entry in the miscellaneous quick bread category or you can just make it for your family and friends.
Let me know about any of your county fair successes. Was it a ribbon for your biscuits or did you raise chickens?
