Most Southerners love food and football, but even more so when the two are combined with friends and family. You may already have favorite snacks, hearty main dishes and desserts that you serve to bring your team game day luck year after year. Are you looking for some new recipe ideas to put a spin on the menu this year? How about including iconic Southern cornbread?
We Southerners tend to think about corn bread as the accompaniment to everyday meals, but it can be right at home at a party. I remember several years ago at the beginning of the Sou thern Food Revival, we were planning the menu for a casual party to celebrate a new Alison Krauss album release. My friend Mindy suggested we serve little corn cakes topped with barbecue and I knew that barbecue on corn cakes was a middle Tennessee tradition. I had never given much thought about a party version, but it sounded like a great idea.
These corn cakes were a big hit as were the dressed-up corn muffins, Tex-Mex Cornbread, and mini corn sticks. All items made great accompaniments to the game day soups, stews and chili. I still love the taste of barbecue and cornbread. Here Below are two versions of barbecue on cornbread that will fit right into your game day menu.
